Interview on NPR Marketplace today
Larry was interviewed this morning on NPR’s Marketplace Tech Report. Larry talks about why the FCC’s proposed net neutrality rules treat wireless broadband with a lighter touch than they do for wired access. Given the explosion in demand and the limited ability for carriers to add towers, increase capacity, and access additional radio spectrum (itself a constraint imposed by the FCC), it makes sense to give wireless carriers more flexibility to restrain users from high-bandwidth applications. File sharing, HD video and other applications are technically possible on a smartphone, but the networks may not be able yet to handle the load.
Op-ed today in Roll Call on Title II
I’ve written an op-ed today in Roll Call urging the FCC to resist the siren call to “reclassify” broadband Internet access as a way to shore up its net neutrality authority. Recent legislative progress suggests the rational parties in this debate are very close to compromise, as they have been all along. But those who are in this fight for unrelated reasons are determined to muddle the discussion as long as possible.
Title II, as I’ve long argued, could do tremendous damage to the Internet ecosystem. Using it to solve the net neutrality jurisdiction problem is like burning down your house to light a cigarette. For starters, you shouldn’t be smoking.
San Francicsco Chronicle op-ed today
Larry has an op-ed titled “Net Neutrality is a Technical, not a Political Problem” in today’s San Francisco Chronicle. He responds to an editorial that ran earlier this week in the paper calling for the FCC to pull the trigger on reclassifying broadband as a “common carrier” service.
Upcoming speaking events
Larry will be a featured speaker at two upcoming technology policy events.
Larry will be speaking on recent developments in broadband regulation on August 11th in San Jose at “State of the Net West 2010.” This event is organized by the Advisory Committee to the Congressional Internet Caucus, and takes place on the eBay campus.
At Tech Policy Central’s “Privacy, Identity and Innovation” conference in Seattle August 17-19th, part of GeekWeek, Larry will be moderating a panel discussion on “Competing on Privacy,” featuring speakers from Yahoo!, TrustE, and the Competitive Enterprise Institute.
CNET article on Supreme Court patent case
My article for CNET on the Bilski case, “Supreme Court hedges on business method patents,” appeared this morning. I’m pleased to say that as a non-journalist I was able to file the story within two hours of the Court releasing the opinions!
Check back later for a blog post on the case and its importance to offline and online businesses alike.
